How to Use the A&D Medical UP-200 Pulse Oximeter
- Ensure your finger is warm and dry. Cold or wet fingers can significantly affect the accuracy of a pulse oximeter reading. If your hands are cold, warm them gently by rubbing them together or holding them under warm water for a minute before measuring. Dry thoroughly before applying the device.
- Remove nail polish or false nails if present. Dark or opaque nail polish and acrylic or gel nails can interfere with the light sensors inside the oximeter and produce an inaccurate or undetectable reading. Remove any nail covering from the finger to be used before measuring.
- Sit quietly and rest for a few minutes. For a resting SpO2 reading that is representative of your baseline, sit still for two to three minutes before applying the device. Avoid exercise, exertion, or any activity that could temporarily alter your oxygen levels or pulse rate immediately before measuring.
- Insert your finger into the device. Open the spring-loaded clip and insert your index or middle finger of either hand into the device up to the sensor window. The fingertip should reach the end of the chamber. The display side of the device should face upward so you can read it clearly.
- Keep your hand and finger still. Any movement of the hand or finger during measurement can cause an erratic reading or an error message. Rest your hand on a flat surface or your lap and keep it still while the reading is taken.

- Moisture: This is not a waterproof device. Keep away from water and damp surfaces. Store in a dry location.
- Carrying case or pouch: Store in the original case or a protective pouch when not in use to prevent the sensor window from being scratched or contaminated with dust, as this can affect reading accuracy over time.

Pulse oximeters measure haemoglobin saturation but cannot distinguish between haemoglobin bound to oxygen and haemoglobin bound to carbon monoxide. In carbon monoxide poisoning, the device will display a falsely normal SpO2 reading even as the patient's blood oxygen delivery is severely compromised. If you suspect carbon monoxide exposure, leave the building immediately and call 999. Do not attempt to use a pulse oximeter to assess the situation.
The UP-200 is designed for adult fingertips, and its accuracy on small children's fingers cannot be assumed.
