FAQs

What is St John's Wort Oil used for topically?
+

A.Vogel St John's Wort Oil is a topical preparation for external application to aching muscles, dry skin, and sensitive or sore areas of the body. St John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) flowers have been macerated in carrier oil and used in European traditional herbal topical preparations for centuries. This product is for skin application only and is entirely separate from oral St John's Wort preparations used for mood support.

Why is St John's Wort Oil red?
+

The characteristic deep red colour of a well-prepared St John's Wort oil comes from hypericin, a naturally occurring compound found in the flowers of Hypericum perforatum. The deeper and more vivid the red, the more thoroughly the flowers have been macerated into the carrier oil — experienced herbalists often regard the depth of colour as an indicator of quality. A.Vogel's oil reflects this traditional preparation standard.

Why does St John's Wort Oil carry a photosensitivity warning?
+

Hypericin and related compounds in St John's Wort can increase the skin's sensitivity to ultraviolet light, a property known as photosensitisation. This applies to topical preparations as well as oral ones. Applying St John's Wort Oil to skin that is then exposed to strong sunlight or UV sources (including sunbeds) may increase the risk of sunburn or skin reactions. Always cover or wash treated areas before sun exposure.

Is this the same as oral St John's Wort products?
+

No. A.Vogel St John's Wort Oil is a topical product for application to the skin — it must not be swallowed. Oral St John's Wort preparations (such as tablets or tinctures taken by mouth for mood support) are entirely different products with different regulatory classifications, dosing, and safety considerations. Do not use this topical oil as an oral supplement.

Can I use this oil for massage?
+

Yes. The 100ml oil format is well suited to massage application, allowing generous coverage across larger areas of skin or for thorough massage into aching or tired muscles. The plant-based carrier oil provides a smooth, comfortable glide for massage without being unduly sticky or heavy. Remember to cover treated skin if going outdoors in strong sunshine afterwards.

Is St John's Wort Oil suitable for the face?
+

Please refer to the current product label for confirmed guidance on facial use. The photosensitivity consideration is particularly important for facial skin, which is regularly exposed to daylight. If you use this oil on the face, avoid going outdoors in strong sunlight for several hours after application and consider using a facial sunscreen over the top if sun exposure is unavoidable.

Is this product vegan?
+

St John's Wort Oil is typically produced from plant-derived ingredients — Hypericum flowers macerated in a plant-based carrier oil — and is therefore generally suitable for vegans. Please confirm vegan suitability from the current INCI ingredient list on the product label before purchasing if this is important to you.

How should I apply the oil?
+

Apply a suitable amount of oil to the affected area of skin and massage gently until absorbed or as desired. The oil can be used directly from the bottle or dispensed onto the hands first. Always wash hands after application unless the hands are the area being treated. For large-area massage, warm the oil between your palms first to make application more comfortable.
