FAQs

Why does the NHS recommend Vitamin D for all children under 5?
+

The UK has insufficient sunlight for most of the year for the skin to make adequate Vitamin D — especially in northern England and Scotland and during autumn and winter months. Exclusively breastfed babies are at particular risk as breast milk is a poor source of Vitamin D. The NHS and UK Chief Medical Officers recommend Vitamin D supplementation for all breastfed babies from birth, and for formula-fed babies who are not receiving at least 500ml of formula daily, which is fortified with Vitamin D. Abidec Drops provide Vitamin D alongside a comprehensive multivitamin profile.

From what age can I give Abidec Drops?
+

Please refer to the current product label for the confirmed age range and age-specific dose volumes. Abidec Drops are formulated for babies and young children from birth — confirm from the label that the product is appropriate for your child's age before use.

Do Abidec Drops contain peanut (arachis) oil?
+

This is an important question — please check the current product label before purchasing. Traditional Abidec Drops formulations contained arachis (groundnut/peanut) oil as an excipient. The current formulation should be confirmed from the label. If your child has a peanut allergy or if there is a family history of peanut allergy, do not use this product without confirming from the current label and consulting your GP or allergy specialist.

How do I give drops to a baby?
+

Use the dropper provided to measure the correct dose for your child's age as stated on the label. The drops can be placed directly into the baby's mouth — a small amount at a time on the inside of the cheek — or mixed into a small amount of formula, expressed milk, juice, or soft food. Do not mix into a full bottle or bowl, as the full dose may not be consumed. Administer once daily at a regular, convenient time.

Can I give Abidec Drops alongside other vitamins?
+

Consult your health visitor, pharmacist, or GP before combining Abidec Drops with any other vitamin or mineral supplement. It is important not to exceed the recommended daily intake for Vitamins A and D in children — both vitamins are fat-soluble and accumulate in the body with excess intake. If you are considering combining Abidec with Healthy Start vitamins or other children's vitamins, seek pharmacist advice on whether this is appropriate.

How long does the 25ml bottle last?
+

Supply duration depends on the age-specific dose volume — confirm from the current product label. The 25ml bottle typically provides several weeks to months of supply depending on whether a 0.6ml or larger dose is used daily.

What is the difference between Abidec Drops and Abidec Advanced Multivitamin Syrup?
+

Abidec Drops are in a concentrated drops format suitable for babies and young children from birth — administered by dropper. Abidec Advanced Multivitamin Syrup is a 5ml spoon syrup format more suitable for older children who can manage a larger liquid dose. The syrup may also contain a broader nutrient profile including additional minerals. Check the current labels for the confirmed age ranges and use the format appropriate for your child's age.
