What Is Acidex Advance Oral Suspension Used For?
Heartburn, acid reflux, and indigestion are among the most common digestive complaints in the UK, affecting millions of people on a daily basis. The burning sensation rising from the stomach into the chest and throat, the sour taste of acid regurgitation, and the discomfort of indigestion after meals can significantly disrupt daily life, sleep, and general wellbeing. Acidex Advance Oral Suspension is an alginate-based antacid suspension formulated to help relieve these symptoms by forming a protective raft that physically prevents stomach acid from flowing back up into the oesophagus, providing effective and fast-acting relief in a pleasant aniseed-flavoured liquid format.
Acidex Advance works through a dual-action mechanism that distinguishes alginate-based preparations from simple antacids. The active ingredient sodium alginate reacts with the natural acid in the stomach to form a thick, viscous gel that sits on the surface of the stomach contents, creating a physical barrier, or raft, that helps to prevent acid from refluxing upward into the oesophagus. At the same time, sodium bicarbonate generates the carbon dioxide gas needed to make this raft buoyant, ensuring it floats effectively on the stomach contents. Calcium carbonate provides additional antacid activity, helping to neutralise excess stomach acid directly and further reducing the acidity of any fluid that may reach the oesophageal lining. Together, these three active ingredients address both the mechanical cause of reflux and the chemical irritation of excess acid.
Acidex Advance Oral Suspension is presented as a ready-to-use liquid in a 250ml bottle, which many people find more convenient and palatable than tablet formulations, particularly those who have difficulty swallowing tablets or who experience symptoms late in the evening. The aniseed flavour makes it a pleasant and easy option for regular use after meals and at bedtime, which is when reflux symptoms are most commonly triggered. The suspension should be shaken well before each use and taken with or after food to allow the raft to form most effectively on the stomach contents.
Acidex Advance is suitable for adults and young people aged 12 and over. It is not recommended for children under 6 years, and caution is advised in those aged 6 to 12. If you are on a sodium-restricted diet, have kidney problems, or are taking other medicines that may interact with antacid preparations, speak to a Pearl Chemist Group pharmacist before use. If your symptoms are severe, persistent, unresponsive to treatment, or accompanied by difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, or vomiting, seek prompt medical assessment from your GP rather than continuing to self-treat. You can also explore our full heartburn and indigestion range for further options.
How to Use Acidex Advance Oral Suspension
- Shake the bottle well before each use. Always shake the bottle thoroughly before measuring your dose to ensure the suspension is evenly mixed and the correct amount of active ingredients is delivered with every dose.
- Measure your dose accurately. Use a 5ml medicine measuring spoon or oral dosing syringe to measure the correct volume. Do not estimate by eye or use a household teaspoon, which may not hold exactly 5ml.
- Take after meals and at bedtime. For best effect, take Acidex Advance after food rather than before eating. The alginate raft forms most effectively when there are stomach contents for it to float on. The bedtime dose is particularly important if you experience nocturnal reflux or symptoms that disturb sleep.
- Swallow the suspension directly. Take the measured dose by mouth. Do not mix with water or other drinks, as this may dilute the formulation and reduce its effectiveness.
- Remain upright after taking the dose where possible. Staying upright for at least 20 to 30 minutes after a dose, particularly the post-meal doses, helps the raft to work most effectively. For the bedtime dose, you may lie down shortly afterwards as the raft provides protection in this position too.
- Replace the cap securely. Replace the cap on the bottle after each use and store as directed. Write the date of opening on the label.
Practical tips
- If you forget a dose after a meal, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue as normal. Do not double up doses.
- Other medicines should ideally be taken at least 2 hours before or after Acidex Advance, as antacids can affect the absorption of some medicines.
- Discard the bottle 28 days after opening.
Acidex Advance Oral Suspension Side Effects
Acidex Advance Oral Suspension is generally well tolerated when used as directed. Side effects are uncommon but may occur in some people.
Common side effects (may affect more than 1 in 10 people)
- Increased wind or bloating, due to the carbon dioxide released during the raft-forming process in the stomach — this is a normal consequence of how the product works and is usually mild and temporary
Less common side effects (may affect between 1 in 10 and 1 in 100 people)
- Nausea or an unpleasant taste, particularly if taken in large quantities
- Constipation, associated with the calcium carbonate component
- Diarrhoea in some individuals
- Mild stomach discomfort or cramping
Rare side effects (may affect fewer than 1 in 100 people)
- Allergic reaction to one or more ingredients, including the parabens preservatives (methyl and propyl parahydroxybenzoate), presenting as a skin rash, itching, or swelling
- In those taking very high doses over a prolonged period, excessive intake of sodium or calcium could theoretically contribute to electrolyte imbalance — this is unlikely at recommended doses but is a consideration for those with kidney impairment or those on sodium-restricted diets
Stop using and seek medical help if you experience:
- A severe allergic reaction, including significant facial swelling, throat swelling, difficulty breathing, or a widespread rash — call 999 or attend accident and emergency immediately
- Severe or worsening abdominal pain
- Any symptom that concerns you or that you believe may be related to this product
Report any unexpected reaction via the MHRA Yellow Card scheme at yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk or speak to your Pearl Chemist Group pharmacist.
How to Store Acidex Advance Oral Suspension

Active Ingredients in Acidex Advance Oral Suspension
| Ingredient | Strength per 5ml dose | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Sodium alginate | 200mg | The primary active ingredient and raft-forming agent. Sodium alginate is a natural polysaccharide derived from brown seaweed. When it reaches the stomach, it reacts with hydrochloric acid to form a thick, cohesive gel that floats on the surface of the stomach contents as a physical raft. This raft acts as a mechanical barrier, helping to prevent stomach acid and contents from refluxing upwards into the oesophagus. It is the key mechanism that distinguishes Acidex Advance from simple antacids. |
| Sodium bicarbonate | 133.5mg | Works in conjunction with sodium alginate to produce the carbon dioxide gas needed to make the alginate raft buoyant, ensuring it floats effectively on the stomach contents rather than sinking. Sodium bicarbonate also contributes mild antacid activity, helping to neutralise excess stomach acid directly. |
| Calcium carbonate | 80mg | Provides additional antacid activity by neutralising excess stomach acid. Calcium carbonate reacts with hydrochloric acid in the stomach to form calcium chloride and carbon dioxide, reducing the overall acidity of the stomach contents. It also helps to strengthen the physical structure of the alginate raft. |

FAQs
Unlike simple antacids that only neutralise stomach acid, Acidex Advance also contains sodium alginate, which forms a physical raft on the surface of the stomach contents. This raft acts as a mechanical barrier, helping to prevent acid and stomach contents from refluxing into the oesophagus in the first place. The combination of raft-forming and acid-neutralising action makes it particularly effective for heartburn and acid reflux where stomach contents are physically rising rather than excess acid production alone being the problem.
Acidex Advance should be taken after meals and at bedtime for best effect. Taking it after food allows the alginate raft to form on top of the stomach contents, where it can be most effective. The bedtime dose is particularly helpful for those who experience reflux symptoms during the night or early morning. Avoid taking the suspension before meals or on an empty stomach, as there will be insufficient stomach contents for the raft to form on.
Antacid preparations like Acidex Advance can affect the absorption of a number of medicines, including some antibiotics, iron supplements, thyroid hormones, and bisphosphonates. As a general precaution, take any other medicines at least 2 hours before or after a dose of Acidex Advance. If you take regular prescribed medicines, speak to a Pearl Chemist Group pharmacist before starting this product to check for any specific interactions that may apply to you.
Alginate-based antacid suspensions are among the reflux remedies most commonly discussed in pregnancy, particularly in the third trimester when heartburn is very common. However, Acidex Advance contains a notable amount of sodium per dose, which is a consideration for those who have been advised to limit their sodium intake during pregnancy. We recommend consulting your GP or midwife before use during pregnancy to confirm that this specific product is appropriate for you.
Acidex Advance is a suspension, meaning the active ingredients are distributed throughout the liquid but may settle towards the bottom of the bottle when it is not in use. Shaking the bottle thoroughly before each dose ensures that the active ingredients are evenly mixed throughout the suspension and that you receive the correct, consistent amount of sodium alginate, sodium bicarbonate, and calcium carbonate with every dose.
Acidex Advance is suitable for short-term relief of heartburn and reflux symptoms. If you find that you need to use it continuously for more than 7 days, we recommend consulting your GP or pharmacist. Persistent or frequent reflux symptoms can sometimes indicate an underlying condition, such as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), a hiatus hernia, or, in rare cases, something more serious that requires investigation. Continuing to self-treat without assessment is not advisable if symptoms are ongoing.
Acidex Advance is not recommended for children under 6 years of age. For children aged 6 to 11, use should only be under the direct supervision of a GP or pharmacist. For young people aged 12 and over, the standard adult dosage applies under appropriate adult supervision. Reflux symptoms in children, particularly younger children, should always be assessed by a GP rather than managed with over-the-counter preparations without guidance.
Acidex Advance uses sodium saccharin as a sweetener rather than sugar, so it does not contribute significant amounts of sugar to the diet. This makes it suitable for people who are monitoring their sugar intake. However, please note that the product does contain sodium, which is a consideration for those on sodium-restricted diets for medical reasons. If you have any concerns about the ingredients in relation to your diet or a health condition, speak to your Pearl Chemist Group pharmacist before use.
