Overview
The Activa Class I Below Knee Open Toe Compression Stocking in sand medium combines the toe-free comfort of the open toe format with the discretion of a skin-tone colourway in a medium fit. It is, in many respects, the most versatile option in the Activa open toe range for those with medium-sized legs — offering all the graduated compression benefits of the standard below knee stocking while leaving the toes entirely free from stocking material, eliminating the discomfort that closed toe stockings can cause on bunions, wider forefeet, or toes with any degree of deformity.
The open toe design also allows a normal sock or specialist foot hosiery to be worn directly on the foot independently of the lower leg compression stocking — a practical advantage for those who need specific footwear insoles, orthotic socks, or simply want to wear a cotton sock for warmth without compromising the compression on the lower leg. In warmer weather, the open toe format noticeably reduces heat build-up in the foot during prolonged wear.
The clinical compression profile is identical to all other Activa Class I options — graduated 14–17 mmHg pressure, firmest at the ankle and progressively reducing towards the knee. The sand colourway is a cool, pale beige that sits naturally against fair to medium skin tones and is considerably less visible under sheer hosiery or light clothing than a dark stocking. Pearl Chemist Group pharmacists offer free compression stocking fitting consultations in store. Browse our full range of compression hosiery and our wider leg health supplies for a complete picture.
How to Use Activa Class I Below Knee Open Toe Compression Stocking Sand – Medium
- Confirm the medium size is correct. Measure your ankle circumference at its narrowest point and your calf at its widest, first thing in the morning before swelling accumulates. Compare against the Activa size chart. NOT FOUND — please confirm ankle and calf measurement ranges for medium from Activa product documentation.
- Apply first thing in the morning before leg swelling has accumulated from gravitational pooling.
- Invert the stocking to the heel. Turn inside out down to the heel pocket, leaving only the foot section right side out. The stocking will end at the open toe band rather than a closed toe seam.
- Position the foot carefully. Slide your foot in with the heel sitting correctly in the heel pocket. The open toe band should sit flat across the base of the toes — just proximal to the toe joints — leaving the toes fully free. If the band digs in or feels tight, the stocking may not be the correct foot length for you — speak to a pharmacist.
- Unroll the stocking gradually up the leg, smoothing each section as you go, until it sits comfortably below the knee.
- Smooth out all creases before wearing. Any wrinkle creates a localised pressure point.
- Wear socks over the open toes if needed. A normal cotton sock or specialist foot hosiery can be worn directly over the toes with the compression stocking providing lower leg compression independently.
- Remove at night unless clinically directed otherwise.
Application tips
- Rubber gloves improve grip on the stocking fabric significantly during application.
- A stocking donning aid helps those with limited flexibility or reduced hand strength.
- Ensure moisturiser is fully absorbed before applying.
For fitting support or advice on open versus closed toe stocking selection, speak to a Pearl Chemist Group pharmacist.

How to Store Activa Class I Open Toe Sand Compression Stocking – Medium
- Unused stockings: Store in original packaging in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
- Washing: Wash after each day's wear. Hand wash in cool water with mild detergent or machine wash at 40°C in a mesh laundry bag. NOT FOUND — please confirm exact washing instructions from Activa documentation.
- Drying: Air dry only. Do not tumble dry or apply direct heat. Do not peg by the open toe band when hanging to dry, as this can distort the edge over time.
- Rotation: Two pairs in rotation recommended for daily users.
- Open toe band inspection: Check periodically for signs of fraying or loss of elasticity at the open toe band, which can cause rolling or an uneven edge during wear.
- Replacement: Replace every three to six months with daily use.
- Keep out of reach of children.

FAQs
The open toe format is the better choice if you have bunions, hammer toes, or any toe deformity where a closed toe stocking creates discomfort or pressure across the forefoot. It is also preferable if you want to wear your own socks or specialist foot hosiery on the foot independently of the lower leg compression, if your forefoot is wider than the standard toe box accommodates comfortably, or if you find closed toe stockings uncomfortably warm during prolonged wear. The lower leg compression — which is the therapeutic component — is identical in both open and closed toe versions of the same size and class.
No. The ankle measurement and the graduated compression profile from the ankle upward are the same in open and closed toe versions of the same size. The sizing is based on ankle and calf circumference in both cases, and the compression delivered from the ankle to the knee is identical. The open toe band sits just below the toes and does not alter the ankle fit or the compression gradient. If anything, some wearers find that the open toe format sits more stably at the ankle because the absence of a closed toe section reduces the tendency for the stocking to be pulled downward by foot movement during the day.
If the open toe band consistently creates a visible ridge or feeling of constriction at the base of the toes, the stocking may not be the correct foot length for you — ankle and calf circumference determine the size, but foot length determines whether the open toe band sits at the correct anatomical point. Speak to a Pearl Chemist Group pharmacist who can assess the fit during a free compression fitting consultation and advise whether a different size or format would sit more comfortably for your individual foot proportions.
Class I compression stockings can be worn during light to moderate exercise and are generally comfortable and beneficial during activity such as walking, gentle cycling, or standing work. During more vigorous exercise, personal comfort and the type of activity should guide wear — some people find compression stockings restrictive during running or high-impact sports, while others wear them throughout. For specific guidance on exercise and compression based on your clinical condition, speak to your GP, physiotherapist, or a Pearl Chemist Group pharmacist.
