How to Use Activon Medical Grade Manuka Honey Tube – 20g
- Perform hand hygiene and don appropriate sterile gloves for wound contact procedures in a clinical setting.
- Prepare the wound as directed by the clinical care plan. Irrigate and clean the wound with sterile saline. Remove loose necrotic material as clinically indicated. Pat the wound surround dry before application.
- Open the tube. Remove the cap and pierce the tube tip seal on first use.
- Apply honey to the wound surface. Squeeze the required amount directly onto the wound surface, into wound cavities, or onto the wound contact surface of a primary dressing. Distribute evenly over the entire wound area using a sterile spatula or gloved finger to ensure complete coverage. Aim for a layer of approximately 3 to 5mm depth across the wound surface, or as directed by the clinical care plan.
- Cover immediately with a secondary dressing. A secondary absorbent dressing must be applied over the honey to retain it in contact with the wound and to absorb the exudate drawn from the wound tissue by the honey's osmotic activity. Select a secondary dressing appropriate to the wound's exudate level.
- Secure the dressing assembly with appropriate fixation as suited to the wound site and patient.
- Change frequency as directed by the clinical care plan, or sooner if the secondary dressing becomes saturated. Honey application may initially increase exudate as osmotic activity draws fluid from the wound — account for this when selecting the secondary dressing and planning change frequency.
- Replace the cap securely after each use to protect the remaining honey in the tube.
