Overview
The AgaMatrix Agile Blood Glucose Test Strips are designed for use exclusively with the AgaMatrix Agile blood glucose monitoring system, providing the test medium through which the meter analyses a small blood sample and returns a blood glucose reading in seconds. For anyone managing diabetes at home — whether Type 1, Type 2, or gestational — test strips are the consumable that makes daily monitoring possible, and having a reliable supply of the correct strips for your specific meter is the practical foundation of any home glucose monitoring routine.
AgaMatrix is a well-regarded name in blood glucose monitoring technology, and the Agile system reflects their focus on accuracy, ease of use, and minimal sample size. Each test strip is engineered to work within the meter's electrochemical sensing system to produce results that meet the accuracy requirements of international standards for blood glucose monitoring devices. The strips require only a small blood sample — typically obtained from a finger-prick lancet — making testing less uncomfortable and reducing the amount of blood needed per test compared with older strip technologies.
This pack of 50 strips provides a practical supply for regular daily testing. Depending on your prescribed testing frequency — which your GP or diabetes specialist nurse will advise on — 50 strips may represent approximately one to two months' supply for once-daily testing, or considerably less for those testing multiple times per day. Having an adequate stock of strips is important, as running out interrupts your monitoring routine at exactly the moments when monitoring matters most. Browse our full range of blood glucose monitoring supplies and our wider range of diabetes management products for complementary items including lancets, lancing devices, and monitoring diaries.
How to Use AgaMatrix Agile Blood Glucose Test Strips
Important: These test strips are designed for use with the AgaMatrix Agile blood glucose meter only. Do not use with any other meter — results obtained from incompatible meter and strip combinations are unreliable and potentially dangerous. Always follow the full instructions supplied with your AgaMatrix Agile meter alongside the guidance below.
- Wash and dry your hands thoroughly before every blood glucose test. Wash with soap and warm water, rinse completely, and dry fully. Residual food, drink, soap, hand cream, or moisture on the fingertip can all affect the accuracy of the reading. Warm hands also improve blood flow to the fingertip, making sample collection easier.
- Prepare your lancing device. Insert a fresh lancet into the lancing device as directed. Set the depth to a level that produces an adequate blood sample for you — start at a shallower setting and increase if needed, rather than starting too deep.
- Remove a test strip from the vial. Open the strip vial and remove one strip. Replace the cap immediately and tightly — test strips are sensitive to moisture and air exposure. Handle the strip by the sides and avoid touching the end that will contact blood or the meter's sensor port.
- Insert the test strip into the meter. Push the strip firmly into the meter's test strip port as directed in the meter instructions. The meter should switch on automatically or display a readiness indicator.
- Lance the fingertip. Use the lancing device on the side of a fingertip — the sides have more capillaries and fewer nerve endings than the pad, producing a better blood sample with less discomfort. A single firm press activates the lancing mechanism. If no blood appears, wipe away the first drop and apply gentle pressure from the base of the finger to encourage a second drop — do not squeeze tightly from the tip, as this can dilute the sample with tissue fluid and affect accuracy.
- Apply the blood sample to the test strip. Touch the tip of the test strip to the blood drop — do not smear or press the strip against the finger. The meter will draw in the blood sample through capillary action when the strip tip contacts the sample correctly. The meter will indicate when sufficient sample has been absorbed.
- Read and record the result. The reading will appear on the meter display in mmol/L within a few seconds. Record the result in your blood glucose diary or monitoring app along with the date, time, and any relevant context such as pre- or post-meal, or around medication.
- Dispose of the used lancet safely. Place the used lancet in a sharps container immediately after use. Never resheath by hand or place in standard household waste — needlestick injury from loose lancets presents a genuine infection risk.
Tips for accurate results
- Always use strips before the expiry date and within the period specified after opening the vial.
- Store strips correctly — see storage guidance — as heat, humidity, and UV light all degrade the strip chemistry and affect accuracy.
- Run a quality control check with the meter's control solution periodically and whenever you open a new vial of strips, to confirm the meter and strip combination is performing correctly.
- If a result seems inconsistent with how you feel, test again with a fresh strip before acting on the result.

How to Store AgaMatrix Agile Blood Glucose Test Strips
- Temperature: Store at room temperature between 4°C and 30°C. Do not expose to excessive heat, direct sunlight, or freezing temperatures — all of these degrade the electrochemical reagents in the strips and produce inaccurate results. NOT FOUND — please confirm the exact storage temperature range from AgaMatrix product documentation and update if it differs.
- Humidity: Store in a cool, dry location. High humidity — such as a bathroom cabinet near a shower — is one of the most common causes of test strip degradation. A bedroom drawer or kitchen cupboard away from the hob or sink is preferable.
- Original vial: Always keep strips in the original vial with the cap replaced tightly immediately after removing a strip. Do not transfer strips to another container — the original vial is designed to protect the strips from moisture and air.
- Do not refrigerate strips that are in current use. Refrigeration introduces moisture condensation that can damage the strip chemistry. Unopened strips may be stored refrigerated if specified by the manufacturer — NOT FOUND, please confirm from AgaMatrix documentation.
- After opening: Note the date the vial is opened. Use the strips within the period specified on the vial or packaging after opening — NOT FOUND, please confirm the post-opening use-by period from AgaMatrix documentation. Discard any remaining strips after this period regardless of the printed expiry date.
- Expiry: Do not use after the expiry date on the vial or outer packaging.
- Keep out of reach of children.

FAQs
No. AgaMatrix Agile Blood Glucose Test Strips are designed exclusively for use with the AgaMatrix Agile blood glucose meter. Each test strip is calibrated to the specific electrochemical sensing system of its paired meter — using a strip in a different meter will produce results that are inaccurate, potentially significantly so, and could lead to dangerous treatment decisions. Always confirm that the strips you purchase are the correct specification for your specific meter model before use.
The electrochemical reagents coated on the test strip are sensitive to air moisture and oxidation. Every second the vial is open, the strips inside are exposed to atmospheric humidity, which gradually degrades the reagent chemistry and reduces the accuracy of results. A vial left open even for a few minutes during a testing session can accelerate deterioration of remaining strips. Replacing the cap immediately and tightly after removing a single strip is one of the most important steps for maintaining strip accuracy throughout the life of the vial.
The most reliable way to check that your meter and strips are performing correctly is to run a quality control test using the control solution supplied with or recommended for your AgaMatrix Agile meter. The control solution contains a known concentration of glucose — if the meter reading falls within the acceptable range printed on the strip vial when the control is tested, your system is functioning correctly. Run a control check when you open a new vial of strips, if you have dropped the meter, if results seem inconsistent with your symptoms, or if strips have been stored in conditions that may have compromised them.
Blood glucose test strips are prescribable on the NHS for eligible patients with diabetes. The specific strips available on prescription depend on local formulary decisions, and your GP will advise on whether AgaMatrix Agile strips are prescribable in your area. If you currently purchase strips privately and would like to explore whether prescription supply is available, discuss this with your GP or diabetes specialist nurse at your next review. Pearl Chemist Group can dispense NHS diabetes prescriptions and our pharmacists can advise on the prescription pathway if needed.
Testing frequency depends on your type of diabetes, your treatment regimen, and your current management goals — it is not a one-size-fits-all recommendation. Your GP, diabetes specialist nurse, or diabetes educator will provide personalised guidance on how often and when to test. As a general principle, those on insulin therapy or at risk of hypoglycaemia typically need to test more frequently than those managing diabetes through diet or oral medication alone. If you are unsure about your recommended testing frequency, contact your diabetes care team for a review.
Do not act on a single unexpected reading without first checking whether it might be a testing error. Wash and dry your hands again and test a second time with a fresh strip from the same vial. If the second reading is consistent with the first, the result is likely accurate. If you have symptoms that match the reading — such as shakiness and sweating with a low reading — treat the symptoms first and then confirm with a retest. For any unexplained pattern of high or low readings across multiple tests, contact your GP or diabetes team. If you are experiencing symptoms of severe hypoglycaemia or diabetic ketoacidosis, seek urgent medical attention.
