As pregnancy progresses, hCG levels rise rapidly — from very low levels at implantation to concentrations easily detectable by a home test by the time of the first missed period. The Alvita Diagnostic test indicates detection of this hCG marker, which is consistent with early pregnancy when present above the test's detection threshold.

Any visible second line in the test zone — however faint — should be considered a positive indication, because even a faint line indicates that hCG has been detected at some level above zero. A faint positive line typically means hCG levels are present but lower than they will be in a few days as the pregnancy progresses — this is most common when testing very early, at or just before the first missed period. If a faint positive is seen, retest in two to three days with the first morning urine — if pregnant, the line should become more distinct as hCG levels rise. False positive results are uncommon but possible in specific circumstances. Fertility treatments containing hCG — such as some trigger injections used in IVF protocols — can cause a positive home pregnancy test result that reflects the administered hormone rather than a natural pregnancy. A very recent pregnancy loss, including a chemical pregnancy that ended very early, can produce detectable hCG levels for a period after the pregnancy has ended. Certain rare medical conditions that cause abnormal hCG production can also produce a positive result. If a positive result is unexpected or you have recently undergone fertility treatment, discuss the result with your GP for clinical confirmation and context.
