What Are Alvita Flight Earplugs Used For?
Air travel, whilst convenient, exposes passengers to prolonged levels of noise that many find uncomfortable, fatiguing, and disruptive to rest. The persistent drone of aircraft engines, the noise of the air conditioning system, and the general ambient sound levels in a pressurised cabin can make it difficult to relax, sleep, or concentrate during a flight. Alvita Flight Earplugs are designed to reduce this noise, providing passengers with a quieter, more comfortable in-flight environment that makes it easier to rest on longer journeys, reduce travel fatigue, and arrive at a destination feeling more refreshed.
Made from slow-recovery polyurethane foam, Alvita Flight Earplugs are designed to be rolled down, gently inserted into the ear canal, and allowed to slowly expand to create a comfortable, effective acoustic seal. The foam material conforms to the shape of the individual ear canal, providing a snug and personalised fit that is comfortable to wear for extended periods. The slow-recovery foam also makes the earplugs gentle to insert and remove, reducing any discomfort from repeated use during a flight or across multiple journeys.
Beyond reducing engine and cabin noise, foam earplugs can also help to create a more isolated, quieter personal environment during a flight, reducing awareness of other passengers, announcements, and general cabin activity in a way that supports rest and reduces sensory overload on long-haul routes. They may also be useful for those who experience heightened sound sensitivity or who find aircraft noise particularly distressing or anxiety-inducing during travel.
Alvita Flight Earplugs are a simple, non-medical consumer product suitable for most adults and older children capable of inserting earplugs correctly under adult supervision. They are not a medical treatment for ear pressure changes, tinnitus, or hearing conditions, and are not a substitute for medical advice if you experience ear pain, discomfort, or hearing changes during or after flying. If you regularly experience significant ear pressure pain during flights, speak to your GP or to a Pearl Chemist Group pharmacist for guidance. How to Use Alvita Flight Earplugs
- Wash and dry your hands. Before handling earplugs, ensure your hands are clean and dry to prevent transferring bacteria into the ear canal.
- Roll the earplug into a thin cylinder. Using clean fingers, roll one earplug between your thumb and forefinger to compress it into the smallest, smoothest cylinder possible. The narrower you can roll it, the easier and more comfortable insertion will be.
- Pull the outer ear upward and back. With your free hand, reach over your head and gently pull the outer part of the ear (pinna) upward and backward. This straightens the ear canal and makes insertion more comfortable and effective.
- Insert the compressed earplug gently. While still holding the outer ear, gently insert the compressed earplug into the ear canal with the other hand. Push it in until it sits comfortably in the canal entrance, with no portion protruding excessively. Do not push so deep that it is difficult to remove.
- Hold in place while the foam expands. Keep your finger gently against the earplug for approximately 20 to 30 seconds while the foam slowly expands and conforms to the shape of your ear canal. This ensures a proper seal and the best noise reduction.
- Repeat for the other ear. Follow the same process for the second earplug.
- To remove. Gently grasp the earplug and slowly twist and pull it out with a gentle rocking motion. Do not pull straight out — a slow, gentle removal prevents discomfort and avoids sudden pressure change.
Tips for best results
- The tighter and more even the roll before insertion, the better the acoustic seal and comfort.
- Insert earplugs before reaching altitude to help manage pressure changes during ascent.
- Ensure you can still hear important safety announcements — if you need to attend to something, simply remove one earplug temporarily.
- Foam earplugs are generally designed for single use — replace with a fresh pair for the return journey or subsequent flights.
Alvita Flight Earplugs — Potential Adverse Effects
Alvita Flight Earplugs are a non-medicinal consumer product and do not have a pharmacological side effect profile. However, the following may occur with earplug use:
- Mild temporary discomfort or a sensation of pressure in the ear canal on insertion — this usually resolves as the foam expands and settles
- A feeling of blocked ears or muffled hearing during use — this is the intended noise-reduction effect
- Ear canal irritation or soreness with prolonged or repeated use, particularly if the earplug is inserted too deeply or if the ear canal skin is sensitive
- In rare cases, earwax may be pushed further into the ear canal with repeated earplug use — if you notice increasing ear blockage or hearing reduction, consult your pharmacist
If you experience significant pain, bleeding, or persistent hearing change after using earplugs, seek medical advice promptly. Speak to your Pearl Chemist Group pharmacist or visit your GP or optometrist as appropriate.
How to Store Alvita Flight Earplugs
- Store in the original packaging in a clean, dry location when not in use.
- Keep away from dirt, dust, and moisture between uses.
- Keep out of the sight and reach of young children — earplugs are a choking hazard.
- Inspect before each use and discard any that are damaged, discoloured, or no longer return to shape after compression.

Key Components of Alvita Flight Earplugs
| Component | Role |
|---|---|
| Slow-recovery polyurethane foam | The primary material of the earplugs. Soft, hypoallergenic polyurethane foam provides comfortable, effective noise reduction when correctly inserted into the ear canal. The slow-recovery property means the foam gradually expands after being compressed for insertion, conforming to the shape of the individual ear canal and creating a snug acoustic seal. This material is widely used in ear protection products for its combination of comfort, effective noise attenuation, and ease of use. |

FAQs
Standard foam earplugs provide noise reduction but do not specifically address the equalisation of air pressure between the middle ear and the cabin during ascent and descent. The ear pressure changes that cause pain and discomfort during a flight occur in the middle ear, behind the eardrum, and are related to the opening and closing of the Eustachian tube. Standard foam earplugs sit in the outer ear canal and do not directly address this mechanism. If you experience significant pressure-related ear pain during flights, speak to your pharmacist about specialist flight pressure-regulating earplugs (which work by controlling the rate of pressure change) or ask your GP for advice on your options.
Yes. Many people find that wearing foam earplugs during a flight makes it considerably easier to rest or sleep by reducing the persistent background noise of the aircraft. Ensure the earplugs are correctly inserted and comfortable before attempting to sleep, and be aware that you may not hear all announcements clearly while wearing them. If you use a travel pillow, earplugs may press against the outer ear — choose a pillow design that does not put pressure on the earplug.
Foam earplugs are generally designed for single use or a limited number of uses before replacement. They collect skin cells, earwax, and moisture with each use, and cannot be effectively sterilised by washing. For hygiene and performance reasons, it is best practice to use a fresh pair for each flight or extended use session. If reusing between short sessions on the same day, inspect the plugs to confirm they are clean and still return to shape after compression.
Standard adult-sized foam earplugs may not fit children's smaller ear canals comfortably or effectively, and loose-fitting earplugs may not provide adequate noise reduction. Very young children should not use earplugs without professional guidance, as there is a risk of incorrect insertion or the earplug becoming difficult to remove. If a child is distressed by aircraft noise during flights, speak to your pharmacist or GP about suitable options for the child's age and ear size.
If an earplug becomes wedged or stuck in the ear canal and cannot be easily removed with a gentle rocking and pulling motion, do not attempt to push it further in or use any implement to remove it. Seek medical assistance — in an airport, find the medical centre; on an aircraft, alert cabin crew; after a flight, visit your pharmacist, GP, or an urgent treatment centre. Do not put yourself at risk of damaging the ear canal or eardrum by attempting forceful removal.
