FAQs

Why is it so important to finish the full course of amoxicillin?
+

Completing the full antibiotic course is essential for two reasons. First, stopping early means the bacteria causing your infection may not be fully eradicated — residual bacteria can cause the infection to return, often with greater severity. Second, any surviving bacteria may be those that were naturally slightly more resistant to the antibiotic, and allowing them to multiply contributes to the development of antibiotic-resistant strains — a significant public health problem. Always complete every capsule in your prescribed course, even if you feel much better before it is finished.

Will amoxicillin treat my cold or flu?
+

No. Colds and influenza are caused by viruses, and amoxicillin — like all antibiotics — is only effective against bacteria. Taking antibiotics for viral infections provides no therapeutic benefit and contributes to antibiotic resistance. Your prescriber will only prescribe amoxicillin when a bacterial infection has been clinically assessed. If you have a cold or flu, rest, hydration, and appropriate symptomatic relief from over-the-counter medicines are the recommended management approach.

I think I might be allergic to penicillin — what should I do?
+

If you have ever had a reaction to penicillin or amoxicillin — including a rash, hives, swelling, or breathing difficulty — this must be reported to your prescriber and pharmacist before starting any new course. Do not take amoxicillin if you have a known penicillin allergy. True penicillin allergy means an alternative antibiotic class will need to be prescribed. If you are unsure whether your previous reaction was truly an allergy, speak to your GP, as formal allergy assessment can clarify this — many people labelled as penicillin-allergic are later found not to be, which has significant implications for their future antibiotic treatment options.

Can I drink alcohol while taking amoxicillin?
+

Unlike some antibiotics such as metronidazole, amoxicillin does not have a significant direct pharmacological interaction with alcohol. Moderate alcohol consumption is unlikely to reduce the effectiveness of amoxicillin or cause a direct adverse reaction. However, alcohol can impair immune function and may exacerbate the nausea and gastrointestinal side effects that some people experience with antibiotics. Avoiding or limiting alcohol during the treatment course is sensible advice while your body is fighting an infection.

I am on the contraceptive pill — do I need additional protection during my amoxicillin course?
+

Current UK guidance from the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (FSRH) does not recommend additional contraceptive precautions for women taking most antibiotics alongside combined hormonal contraceptives, as there is no robust evidence that broad-spectrum antibiotics reduce contraceptive efficacy. However, if the diarrhoea or vomiting caused by amoxicillin is severe enough to interfere with pill absorption, additional barrier contraception should be used until normal pill absorption is restored. Speak to your Pearl Chemist Group pharmacist for the most current guidance on contraception during antibiotic treatment.

What should I do if I develop diarrhoea during my amoxicillin course?
+

Mild diarrhoea is a common side effect of amoxicillin and usually resolves after completing the course as the gut flora rebalances. Keep well hydrated and continue the course. However, if the diarrhoea is severe, persistent (lasting more than 24 to 48 hours after finishing the course), bloody, or accompanied by significant abdominal pain and fever, seek urgent medical advice. Severe antibiotic-associated diarrhoea can sometimes be caused by Clostridioides difficile infection, a serious condition that requires specific treatment.
