Emergency Contraception for Over 35s: What Options Are Available?
Accidents can happen at any age. Whether you're in your 20s or over 35, unprotected sex or contraception failure can leave you worried about an unplanned pregnancy. If you’re over 35 and looking for emergency contraception in the UK, rest assured because you have safe, effective options available.
Let’s walk through what’s available, how it works, and where you can access it quickly and confidentially.
Can Women Over 35 Use Emergency Contraception?
Yes. Most women, including those over 35, can safely take the emergency contraceptive pill or use other emergency contraception options. Your age does not limit your access. However, your overall health, any regular medication you take, and certain health conditions may influence which option is best for you.
If you’re unsure, speaking to one of our trained pharmacists at Pearl Chemist Group can help you choose the right solution based on your individual needs.
What Are Your Options?
There are two types of emergency contraception available in the UK:
The Morning After Pill
There are two main brands used in the UK:
- Levonelle: Levonelle pill must be taken within 3 days (72 hours) after unprotected sex. It is most effective when taken as soon as possible.
- ellaOn: ellaOn option can be taken within 5 days (120 hours) of unprotected sex and is often preferred for its wider time window.
Both pills work by delaying or stopping ovulation. They do not terminate a pregnancy and won’t harm an existing pregnancy if it has already started.
The IUD (Copper Coil)
The intrauterine device is a small T-shaped coil that can be inserted into the womb within 5 days of unprotected sex. It’s the most effective form of emergency contraception and can be used as regular contraception going forward.
However, the coil must be fitted by a trained professional. It may not be ideal if you need something immediate or don’t want a long-term option.
Are There Any Restrictions or Risks for Over 35s?
Generally, age alone doesn’t limit your emergency contraception options. However, you should speak to our pharmacists if:
- You have severe asthma.
- You take St John’s Wort or certain medications for epilepsy, HIV, or tuberculosis.
- You use acid reflux medicine like omeprazole.
- You’re on rifampicin or rifabutin antibiotics.
- You’ve had allergic reactions to contraceptive ingredients in the past.
Our pharmacist will ask about your medical history to ensure the pill is safe and effective for you.
How Does Emergency Contraception Work?
The morning-after pill works by delaying ovulation so that an egg isn’t released for fertilisation. If ovulation has already occurred, it may not be effective. That’s why timing is essential.
The IUD works by stopping sperm from fertilising an egg and also prevents a fertilised egg from implanting in the womb lining.
What About Side Effects?
Most people don’t experience serious side effects, but some may notice:
- Nausea or mild stomach pain
- Headache
- Feeling tired or dizzy
- Irregular periods (earlier, later, heavier, or more painful)
If you vomit within 2 hours of taking Levonelle or 3 hours of taking ellaOne, you may need to take another dose. Speak to our pharmacist right away.
Emergency contraception does not impact your long-term fertility.
