FAQs

How do I know if I am Skin Type 3?
+

Clinique Skin Type 3 is combination skin — typically an oily, shiny, or congestion-prone T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) with relatively normal or drier cheeks. If you recognise this pattern in your own skin, or if you find that moisturisers leave you shiny in some areas but still dry in others, Type 3 is likely your best match. If in any doubt, Clinique's skin type tool or our pharmacy team can help you confirm before purchasing.

What is the difference between the Type 2 and Type 3 kits?
+

The fundamental difference lies in the intensity of the Clarifying Lotion and the moisturiser texture. Type 2 uses a gentler Clarifying Lotion and a richer lotion moisturiser suited to dry skin's greater nourishment needs. Type 3 uses Clarifying Lotion 2, which works at a higher exfoliation level appropriate for combination skin, and replaces the lotion with a lightweight, oil-free gel moisturiser that hydrates without contributing shine. Using the wrong type for your skin will reduce the system's effectiveness.

Will the Clarifying Lotion 2 dry out my skin?
+

When used as directed for Skin Type 3, the Clarifying Lotion 2 should improve skin texture and clarity without causing dryness, provided the Step 3 moisturiser is applied immediately afterwards. The system is designed to work as a whole — the exfoliating step followed by the hydrating step keeps the skin in balance. If you do experience any dryness or irritation initially, reduce to once-daily evening use until your skin adjusts.

Can I use the gel moisturiser in this kit if I also have some dry areas on my face?
+

Yes. The gel moisturiser in the Type 3 kit provides enough hydration for the drier areas of a combination complexion while keeping oilier zones comfortable and shine-free. If you find the drier areas of your face still need more moisture, you can apply a slightly more generous amount of gel to those zones, or use a richer moisturiser on the cheeks only while continuing with the gel elsewhere.

Does this kit help with blackheads?
+

Yes, the Clarifying Lotion 2 can help to reduce the appearance of blackheads over time. Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, which means it penetrates into the pore and breaks down the sebum and dead cell mixture that forms blackheads. Results are gradual rather than immediate — consistent twice-daily use over four to six weeks is typically when the improvement in pore appearance and congestion becomes clearly noticeable.

Is this suitable for teenage skin?
+

Yes, the Clinique 3-Step system is suitable from the late teens onwards, and combination skin is very common in this age group. The fragrance-free, allergy-tested formulation is well suited to skin that may also be reactive or prone to breakouts. The Type 3 kit addresses the oiliness and congestion that teenage combination skin often presents without over-drying or aggravating the skin. For concerns about active acne rather than general combination skin management, it is worth consulting a pharmacist about additional options.

How long will the mini kit last?
+

With twice-daily use as directed, the mini kit will typically last two to three weeks. It is designed as a trial or travel size, allowing you to assess whether the system suits your skin before investing in the full-size products. For ongoing use at home, the full-size versions of each product are more economical and will last considerably longer.

Can I use this alongside other skincare products such as serums or eye creams?
+

Yes. The 3-Step system forms a cleanser, toner, and moisturiser foundation onto which additional products can be layered. If you use a serum, apply it after Step 2 and before Step 3. Eye cream should be applied after Step 2 and alongside or before Step 3, depending on the product's instructions. Avoid layering additional exfoliating acids on top of the Clarifying Lotion without first consulting a skincare professional, as over-exfoliation can compromise the skin barrier.
