When you’re suffering from an allergic reaction or hay fever, you’ll surely be looking for a fast, effective treatment that can stop the symptoms quickly. There are a lot of treatments available, in particular, antihistamineallergy & hay fever tablets, which stop the body from producing the symptoms associated with an allergic reaction. However, when it comes to choosing the right treatment for you there are several options which can make it hard to know which one to choose.
In this article, we’ll explain the difference between non-drowsy and drowsy antihistamines and compare the effectiveness of both.
Types of Antihistamine Allergy and Hay Fever Tablets
Antihistamine allergy & hay fever tablets are typically divided into 2 main groups:
1. Older antihistamines (aka first-generation antihistamines) treat allergy symptoms and also can cause drowsiness, sedation, fatigue, and decreased alertness or concentration.
Allergy medicines that cause drowsiness include:
·Benadryl Allergy Relief Caps [GSL] 12S
·Benadryl Plus Capsules Allg/Relief 12S
Newer antihistamines (aka second-generation antihistamines) treat most common allergy symptoms, without the drowsiness.
Non-drowsy allergy medicines include:
•Piriteze Allergy Tabs 10MG 7S
•Clarinex (desloratadine)
•Allegra (fexofenadine)
Are Non-Drowsy Allergy and Hay Fever Tablets Really Effective?
When it comes to antihistamine tablets for allergies, there's no proof to suggest that any particular antihistamine is better than the other at relieving allergy symptoms. Both first-generation (drowsy) and second-generation (non-drowsy) antihistamine allergy & hay fever tablets are highly effective at treating allergy symptoms such as sneezing, itchiness, rash, cough, and congestion.
One type may work for one person but may not be effective enough for another. If you suffer from allergies regularly, you might have to try a few different types before you find the one that works best for you.
Non-drowsy antihistamines are generally the best option, as they're less likely to make you feel sleepy so you can tackle your day free from miserable allergy symptoms without feeling like a zombie. But, if your allergy symptoms are keeping you awake at night, first-generation antihistamine allergy & hay fever tablets can help you get a good night's sleep.
