Hair Loss: Myths vs. Facts

Hair loss can be scary, embarrassing and a challenge to treat. Hair loss can affect anyone, no matter your gender. There are multiple reasons for hair loss, and just as many myths about how to prevent hair loss, how to treat it and what to use.  It may also be useful to determine if hair loss runs in the family prior to attempting to treat it. When you are ready for treatments, Pearl Chemist has a wide variety of natural hair care products to treat your hair loss available for purchase online.

Some myths to be aware of whilst you figure out how to treat your hair loss:

  1. Baldness is passed down through your mother’s side:  untrue!  Baldness may have a genetic component, but it can be passed down through either side!
  2. Bald means more testosterone:  untrue!  A hormone called DHT has been shown to play a role in baldness, but testosterone has nothing to do with it!
  3. Hair loss is a problem that only men have:  untrue!  Women experience hair loss, but more often it occurs evenly and across the entire scalp.
  4. Stress causes hair loss:  part true!  Regular, daily stress should not have a big effect on your hair, but experiencing large, traumatic events can contribute to it.
  5. Hair loss is permanent:  partly true!  If your hair loss is genetically related, then it is more likely to be permanent.  However, if it is related to health conditions or is postpartum related, it can, in many cases, rectify itself.
  6. Shampooing your hair “too much” causes hair loss:  untrue!  Our hair undergoes a constant natural shedding process. You may notice hair loss in the shower as it tends to come out during washing or brushing/combing.
  7. Wearing hats can cause hair loss:  untrue!  Hair follicles derive their oxygen for growth from the bloodstream, and don’t need to be “aired out” to receive oxygen.

If you are experiencing hair loss that seems excessive to you or are seeing bald patches on your head, then you should speak to your GP. There may be treatments available for you, so don’t be afraid or ashamed to bring it up. If it’s something that is temporary, for example post natal hair loss, there are a number of natural hair care products that can contribute to the appearance of volume whilst you recover.
