You are feeling good, your blood is pumping, and you are proud of yourself for completing your workout, but then the next day your muscles are sore and painful. This can happen after starting a new form of exercise or from pushing yourself, but sometimes it can happen to the most seasoned of athletes too. If you are experiencing muscle soreness after a workout, don’t let it put you off exercising. Read on to find out the reasons why.
What Causes Muscle Soreness?
Muscle soreness usually starts 1-2 days after exercising or working out and it is perfectly normal. In fact, the soreness is a sign that your exercise routine is improving your fitness level! When your muscles have to work harder or differently, the muscle fibres and tissues undergo a type of microscopic damage. This is what causes the pain you feel the next day.
It might sound scary to learn you are causing damage to your muscles, but don’t worry because this damage is quickly repaired by your body. Then once your muscles have healed and recovered, they will have more strength and stamina than they did before.
How to Treat Muscle Soreness?
Your muscle soreness should go away within a few days and you will rarely need any treatment from a healthcare professional. You can even continue working out if you are sore because once your muscles warm up, you won’t be in as much pain. The soreness can be very uncomfortable, though. Luckily there are many easy ways to help ease your symptoms.
- Take a warm bath: The warm water can relax and soothe sore muscles.
- Use an ice pack: Ice can reduce the intensity of muscle pain.
- Get a massage: Manipulation of the muscles can relieve any tension or pain.
- Use topical creams: The topical medication is absorbed into the skin and provides immediate pain relief.
- Take painkillers: There are several tablets available aimed at relieving muscle pain.
