Living with Chronic Headache

It’s highly likely that you have experienced a headache in your life.  However, if you experience headaches more days than not, you likely suffer chronic headaches. Chronic headaches are no laughing matter. They can be absolutely debilitating and leave you bargaining with the unseen for mercy.  Some say there’s no worse pain. There are many subtypes of chronic headaches and many different paths to treatment. Pearl Chemist has a wide selection of pain relief tablets for migraine and other headache relief available online or in store.

Types of chronic Headache:
Migraine:  typically occurs in those with a history of migraines. They tend to affect one or both sides of the head, have a pulsating, throbbing sensation and cause moderate to severe pain.  They also cause nausea, vomiting or both and/or sensitivity to light and sound.

Chronic Tension-type:  these typically affect both sides of your head, cause mild to moderate pain and cause pain that feels like pressing or tightening as opposed to pulsating.

New daily persistent:  usually a sudden onset, in people without a headache history. They become constant within three days of your first headache. They affect both sides of your head, cause pain that feels like pressing or tightening - not pulsating - cause mild to moderate pain and may have some features of chronic migraine or chronic tension-type headache.

Hemicrania continua:  affects one side of your head, are daily and continuous with no pain-free periods. Pain is moderate with spikes of severe pain and can become severe with migraine-like symptoms. This headache is associated with at least one of the following:

  • Tearing or redness of eye on affected side
  • Nasal congestion or runny nose
  • Drooping eyelid or pupil narrowing
  • Sensation of restlessness

The causes of chronic headaches are not well understood, but some factors have been identified as possible contributory factors.

  • Inflammation in blood vessels around the brain - strokes included
  • Infection
  • Intracranial pressure changes (low or high)
  • Brain Tumour
  • Traumatic Brian Injury

If you are experiencing a headache that is sudden and severe, you should seek medical attention immediately. Additionally, if you experience a fever, stiff neck, seizure, double vision, weakness, numbness, difficulty speaking or your headache follows a head injury - no matter how minor - you should also seek medical attention.
