What Are the 7 Principles of Healthy Weight Loss?

Weight loss at any age can be a challenge. We’ve all done that “crash” diet to get into that special dress for that special occasion, but the older we get, the harder it is to do. There are some tried and true principles for weight loss that should work for everyone.  It may take some time, but some patience and grit will get you there.

  • Balance - balance includes not just a balanced diet, but overall life balance. So whilst you should strive to have a balanced diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables, you should also see balance in your life. This includes movement/exercise, good sleep (amount of time/quality), socialising, time for hobbies and working to live rather than living to work.
  • Nutrient Timing - There may be some truth to having a protein shake in the 15-60 minutes following a vigorous workout, but this is not something you should be engaging in without supervision.
  • Self-Monitoring - self monitoring can involve keeping track of calories, carbs, and protein/fat/carbs rations. The bottom line is that healthy weight loss is down to one issue - calorie deficit. You should take in less calories than you exert.  If you do this, and exercise to increase your calorie exertion, you will lose weight.
  • Selective Restrictions - restricting what you eat is something that all people trying to lose weight inevitably engage in.  It is advisable to decrease foods that can be considered “empty calories” and have low caloric vs. nutritional value.
  • Low Caloric Density - these are foods that are low in calories but are high in nutrients. So they have a high value in keeping you healthy but do not take a huge portion of your daily calorie allowance.  Eggs are an excellent example of a nutrient dense food.
  • Consistency - it is important that no matter how you feel and even if you hit a plateau, you find a way to maintain consistency.  Often, that means finding weight management services.
  • Motivation - This one might be the most difficult one to hang on to.  You will plateau.  This is why engaging weight management services will help you.
