Emergency contraception is a preventive method used to hinder pregnancy after having unprotected sex or failing to use the right contraception. For instance, there were holes in the condom or you forgot to take the pill.
In such cases, there are two emergency contraception options you can explore. These are:
● The emergency contraceptive pill, like Plan B One-Step, AfterPill, etc.
● IUD, more commonly known as an Intrauterine Device
How Does Emergency Contraception Work?
If you're taking the emergency birth control pill, you can choose between two kinds: Levonelle and ellaOne. On the one hand, Levonelle contains a synthetic version of progesterone, which can stop or delay your body's natural egg release (or ovulation). However, for this to work, you need to take this pill within 72 hours after sex.
On the other hand, ellaOne contains a component known as ulipristal acetate, which can stop your natural progesterone hormones from working properly. Because of this, it can also stop or delay your ovulation. But, you must take the pill five days after intercourse to prevent pregnancy.
If you choose IUD, you'll undergo a simple procedure that involves putting a uterine device inside your womb. This device will release copper, thereby stopping the egg from being fertilised. For this to work, your doctor must perform the IUD within the first five days of your intercourse or five days after your ovulation.
If you prefer, you can also choose to leave the device inside your uterus as an alternative contraceptive.
How Effective is Emergency Contraception?
Emergency contraception in Streatham is highly effective. The pills can prevent over 95% of unplanned pregnancies when taken within the recommended timeline.
In the same light, less than 1% of women who choose an IUD become pregnant. As such, it's considered the most effective emergency contraception in Morden, and other parts of South London.
