The unknown causes of stomach pain can be scary, and the invention of the internet has just added more confusion and worry. In just a few clicks, an innocent Google search can mistakenly lead you to the conclusion that death is imminent!
But the truth is, pain or discomfort in your stomach can be due to several common (and non life-threatening factors). Your torso is home to lots of essential body organs, your pain could potentially be linked to a problem with one of these.
Here is a guide to the most common stomach pain symptoms, causes, and treatments.
What Is Abdominal Pain?
The most common (and less serious) causes of stomach pain may include food poisoning, constipation, lactose intolerance, irritable bowel syndrome, stomach virus, or food allergies. Other, more serious, possible causes may include a bowel blockage, appendicitis, gastroesophageal reflux, an abdominal aortic aneurysm, cancer – all of which do require medical attention.
Types of Abdominal Pain
● Acute pain can appear suddenly and unexpectedly
● Chronic pain due to a medical condition that can last for months or even years with symptoms coming and going
● Progressive pain gets worse in time and usually has other accompanying symptoms.
Abdominal Pain Causes
Whether you've got a mild bellyache or sharp cramps, abdominal pain can have many causes. For example, you might have a stomach flu, constipation, or indigestion or, if you're a woman, abdominal pain may be caused by menstrual cramps.
Other possible causes include:
• Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
• Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis
• Food poisoning
• Food allergies

• Abdominal muscle strain or pull
You may also get abdominal pain if you have pelvic inflammatory disease, have ulcers, or you are lactose intolerant. There are also many other reasons for stomach pain which are too many to list in this article.
