Types of Headaches You Should Be Aware Of

Headaches can be more than just a pain in the head. Usually, it is a minor inconvenience and can be relieved with some good old rest or if not, some pain relief or sinus relief tablets. However, in some cases it could be a sign of something more serious and you should be aware of signs for when a headache is ‘just’ a headache or when/if there is cause for further concern.

There are several types of headaches. Primary and Secondary. A secondary headache is a headache that you experience due to a primary medical condition.

A sinus headache is a good example of a secondary headache. It’s likely a secondary headache if:

  • It’s the first or the worst headache you’ve ever had
  • It came on with no warning
  • You have another condition that can bring it on
  • It causes fainting/seizures
  • It happens after exertion

A primary headache is when the headache is that actual symptom. Oftentimes, primary headache sufferers will suffer chronic headaches. Chronic headaches mean that these headaches will occur repeatedly and require treatment as the primary issue. Some common primary headaches, symptoms and treatments are:

Tension Headache - slow onset with dull, moderate pain. Usually hurts on both sides of the head and may extend to the back of the neck and head. Can be relieved with over the counter medications, some anti-depressants, a consistent sleep schedule, and regular exercise for stress relief.

Migraine - a throbbing pain, with light sensitivity. Can last several hours or days and cause nausea or vomiting. Can be relieved with rescue medication and preventative medication to prevent future migraines.

Cluster Headache - several headaches occurring in sudden onset in a series or cluster, on one side often behind one eye, often causing red, water eyes.  Oxygen treatments, lifestyle treatments and prescription medications are used for treatment.

Headaches in Children
Children get headaches for the same reasons as adults - an infection or illness such as a fever, sinusitis, or ear infection. Kids do suffer migraines, and about 70% of kids who suffer migraines have a family member who also does. Take your child to the GP if they suffer:

  • Loss of vision
  • Vomiting
  • Muscle weakness
  • Fever
  • Stiff neck
  • Any symptoms that wake them in the night
  • Pain in the back of the head (in young children)
